Recognizing these similarities is important, but so is recognizing some of the crucial differences which exist as well. It is vital to the success of improvement efforts to realize that process change entails cultural change, and to understand the ramifications this implies. Numerous social and technical barriers must be overcome in order to effect lasting improvement. This paper presents ten patterns of software process improvement success which illustrate some of the important similarities and differences between improvement projects and development projects.
