PLoP 2006 Shepherded Papers

Notes on Paper 25: ACCEPTED

Hi folks. Here's my assessment of Paper 25 based on the given criteria:

(1) The quality and wholeness of the pattern(s) or pattern language.

The paper is in pretty good shape -- it's as good as or better than most papers we accept to PLoP. It's in fine shape for workshopping. There are still some parts where they do a little bit of handwaving, but they've mastered the form well enough that each pattern is complete enough to discuss and it's possible to understand the main point of each pattern. The language itself holds together well and forms a cohesive whole.

(2) Degree of improvement during the shepherding process, and openness of the authors to revisions;

The authors were very open to revisions and cooperative. They didn't always understand some of my comments, but I think that's due to their unfamiliarity with other examples rather than language issues or anything harder to handle.

(3) Relevance of the pattern or pattern language, based on the opinions of the program committee

The paper is on a subject that's been partially explored by Bob Hanmer in one of his pattern languages, but the authors take it off in a new and mostly unexplored direction. The patterns have the good aspect that they're stuff "people in this industry already know" so they are recognizable as patterns in that sense.

My recommendation is that we accept the paper for workshopping.

Kyle
