Dialogue workshop for using Pattern Languages for supporting everyday life

Abstract: Pattern language, which was originally invented in the field of architectural design, applied to software design, and then developed into the design of actions and activities, has recently expanded into the area of lifestyle and life design. In this PLoPourri, we will take up some of the pattern languages recently created by Iba Lab and use them in a Dialogue Workshop. In the Dialogue Workshops, we will talk together about the experiences of the participants themselves that are connected to the patterns, and use this as a reference for our own pattern practice by learning about the actual practice and gaining a deeper understanding of the content of the patterns. The following patterns will be covered in this session (participants will choose one of the patterns to participate).

• A Pattern Language for Nurturing an Exciting Life — Each of us is nurturing an exciting life. Life is sometimes fun, sometimes sad, and we have overcome many events to get to where we are today. In this dialogue workshop, we will share our experiences of nurturing an exciting life using A Pattern Language for Nurturing an Exciting Life. Get inspiration for creating a future that is as you are, and think about what exciting life you want to nurture. 
• A Pattern Language for Living and Caring Together — In this workshop, we will hold a dialogue for Think About Caring for Your Family. Now, Our world is now rapidly aging. As people get older, they often need someone to help. Even if we don’t get old, we may need care because of a sudden accident. Or, we may need care because of a sudden illness, like COVID‑19. It is never too early to talk about the care of your family.

Organizers' Bios
Takashi Iba is a Professor at the Faculty of Policy Management, Keio University. He received a Ph.D. in Media and Governance from Keio University. He is the president of CreativeShift Lab Inc., a board member of The Hillside Group, and a board member of MITSUKARU+WAKARU. Dr. Iba creates numerous pattern languages related to creative human actions in collaboration with his students: Learning Patterns, Presentation Patterns, Collaboration Patterns, Words for a Journey, Project Design Patterns and so on. He writes academic books in Japanese, such as Pattern Language, Creative Learning, Social Systems Theory, and Introduction to Complex Systems.
Rio Nitta is senior researcher at Keio Research Institute at SFC and Ph.D student of Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University. She was selected as a supported student by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). She studies how to design an exciting life, and has created pattern languages in various areas such as reading and illustrating.
Erika Inoue studies in the Faculty of Policy Management at Keio University. As a member of the Iba Laboratory, she creates pattern languages in several fields, such as management and well-being at work. She is one of the co-authors of Online Education Patterns, Part 1 and Part 2, which are published in EuroPLoP 2021 and PLoP 2021, respectively. She also took part in an online education seminar and introduced Online Education Patterns to more than 100 university teachers.
